"Smart 3D works" software and e-commerce system for Ortho Baltic

Development of 3D CAD software and implementation of e-commerce system for orthopedic medical devices company Ortho Baltic

The Client

Ortho Baltic is one of the largest orthopedic medical devices companies in Europe, focusing on the design and manufacture of orthopedic footwear. With 23 years of experience, the company has gained wide international recognition. Most of its products are exported not only to European countries but also to the USA and UAE. One of the company's main focus areas is the development of customized, bespoke foot products, with major attention on individual orthopedic footwear. In 2020 Indeform's dedicated team joined forces with Ortho Baltic to develop intelligent medical systems and tools to automate footwear manufacturing processes.

The Problem

Ortho Baltic faced challenges in managing time and other company resources when conventional footwear design processes required too much redundant work and effort. Also, the company had the objective to speed up the footwear order placement processes by implementing an e-commerce system accessible to customers in both B2B and B2C sectors.

The Solution

To ensure faster and more efficient design processes for customized footwear, the 3D Computer-Aided Design Software (CAD) called "Smart 3D Works" was developed and implemented. 3D CAD technology provides the ability to create, test, and document three-dimensional objects in digital space. The system has enabled an orthopedic surgeon and a clinical engineer to collaborate digitally to design customized foot products. In addition, the modeling of the products was designed so that the products could be printed on a 3D printer.

One of the main features of the system is the automated detection of anatomical points, which helps to accurately identify the anatomical structure of the patient's foot. Machine learning is used to achieve this goal, which ensures the efficiency of the system by learning from the provided data and improving algorithms that can perform the functions required for efficient and fast product design.

All the products developed and the associated data are automatically hosted in a clinical database, which ensures easy accessibility of data at any time, reduces redundancy, and optimizes the use of company resources.

In addition, the system includes an order management system that enables orthopedic surgeons and clinical engineers to communicate effectively, place orders, and monitor the order process.

The system effectively facilitates and speeds up the production process of orthopedic footwear, ensuring high quality and customization. The use of company resources is optimized through the efficient use of modern technologies and the automation of resource-intensive work processes.

Challenges

Creating a complex 3D interface in a digital environment that is not only functional but also attractive and easy to use requires a lot of skill and care. One of the main challenges is the technical challenges in terms of speed and performance that can arise due to large volumes of data and complex visualizations. However, Indeform's professionals have successfully applied their competencies to create an attractive and efficient 3D CAD system that has facilitated and improved the user experience and contributed to more efficient business processes.

Value Added

Automation of redundant work has led to a:

  • More efficient allocation of time, financial, human, and other resources.

The development of "Smart 3D works", a 3D CAD system that integrates order management and e-commerce systems, helped:

  • Speed up the design of personalized orthopedic footwear;
  • Ensured fast communication between surgeons and engineers;
  • Provided efficient order processing and fulfillment processes.

Final Words

Automation and the application of advanced technologies in personalized orthopedics is an important step forward. Smart medical devices contribute not only to the efficient use of company resources but also to improving the quality of life and health of patients. Therefore, this technological solution is important for production, healthcare, and service provision.
